Why every person should consider a boudoir photo shoot
Boudoir Photography has been growing in popularity over the last couple of years. It’s all over Facebook and Instagram. But what is boudoir photography? Here’s what it is and why every single woman needs a boudoir photography experience.
Boudoir ➤ noun bou·doir \ˈbü-ˌdwär, ˈbu̇-, ˌbü-ˈ, ˌbu̇-ˈ\ ➤ a woman’s dressing room, bedroom, or private sitting room
In its simplest form, boudoir photography is intimately photographing a woman in a bedroom setting. That’s the most basic definition ever and doesn’t really do justice to what boudoir photography is really all about. Boudoir Photography is SO much more than just photographs.
It’s about bravery, excitement and beauty. It’s about celebrating you.
Boudoir photography helps women of all shapes, sizes, and colors see how beautiful they truly are, inside and out.
Let me share a little about me. In July 2012, at age 52, I injured my back thanks to a herniated disc at my L4/L5 vertebrae. This had the debilitating effect of my slipped disc pressing on my sciatic nerve for almost 3 years. In April 2015 I finally had back surgery to relieve the 24/7 pressure and pain. As I was going through physio during my recovery period, my body was not responding the way the doctors had anticipated. This subsequently led to more examinations, which is when I learned that I had no cartilage left in my left hip – which meant that I required a full hip replacement, which I received in July 2016. Let me tell you, when your body suffers through these types of injuries your mobility gets severely restricted. When you also factor in the prescribed medications and a body that was also in menopause, the weight gain is inevitable.😳
I could’ve chosen to let that end my photography business, to seriously derail my chosen career path, to dictate how I feel about myself. But I didn’t. I chose to use my story of overcoming these injuries and self esteem issues, to empower other women. You can read more about my “why” here.
I want every single woman to feel beautiful, no matter what. No matter what. If you’ve gained weight, if you’ve lost weight, if you have 3 kids, if you’ve just experienced a breakup or divorce, if you just got married, if you just want to celebrate you, you deserve to feel beautiful no matter who you are and what you’ve been through.
Boudoir photography also doesn’t have to mean lingerie. There are so many options for what to wear and it ranges depending on your style. Boudoir is more about the experience and the journey you go through, than about what you wear. You can feel just as sexy and beautiful in an oversize T-shirt and knee-high wool socks, as you can feel in a corset with heels on!
A great first step is to figure out your style by picking 3 words that you’d like to describe your boudoir experience. For example, if the words fun, playful, and flirty are the first that come to mind, then you can choose pieces of clothing that represent that.
To me, boudoir photography is about empowering women. The power that a photograph has is often overlooked and can change lives. There is nothing as amazing as seeing a woman who has been self conscious their entire lives get a boudoir photo shoot done and turn into the best version of themselves. There aren’t many jobs where you can witness someone changing right in from of your eyes. I have the best job in the world!
I read something the other day that struck me. “Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.”
The media is forcing us to feel bad about ourselves everyday, whether we realize it or not. Our daughters, sisters and mothers are growing up watching us tear each other down. How do we stop this? This is why boudoir photography is so important. Every women needs a boudoir experience because every woman deserves to feel amazing in their own skin, exactly how they are right now.
Boudoir photography is for any shape, size, color, and age. There is no perfect body. YOU are your perfect body.
